If you transcode all of your media to Prores you'll be able to have a nice smoth editing experinence (even right now) on a cheap m1 (off course everybody knows that those SoC aren't intended for any types of 3d job purpose, so still not fusion at all or even NR it's a hard job and probably it always will be on M1). Anyway I think when somebody buys a computer for editing purpose, they should go based on their own workflow, for instance mine it's all about h264 and h265 footage (and i know this codec is intended as delivery one, not as editing purpose, but 90% of times you just put all footages in timeline as they are) without any type of 3d purpose or somethings like that, so M1 it seemed to be not wrong at all (because Apple Soc have built in hardware encode and decode for h26x 422 10 bit).Having said that, what I will say below is about those who have a workflow like mine, this is not true for everyone. To be honest, many of these reviews focused on a single track on the time line, but a the end of the day i think you will never use just one track on your editing tab (or maybe you do, who knows?). In fact in terms of performance, in every review, he has been always a step back FCP and probably way better then Premiere (as i said, just in terms of performance on M1). All this on a cheap notebook which runs for hours off-mains and stays silent.But finishing? Come on, get a decent desktop PC if you can find a good GPU that’s not overpriced.For the very beginning no one has been impressed of DR performance on M1. An iMac from 2017 with a Radeon 8GB graphic card plus an external GPU via TB3 plugged in and an late 2013 MacPro (black can) with two 3 GB GPUS. If you want to do serious video editing you need a powerfull machine.The mac mini m1 was tested vs. It is indeed an incredible fast little machine but this machine is for private or amateur users. This will change soon or later, with new hardware (the GPU integrated on new intel CPU seems to be capable to handle h26x 422 10 bit via hardware) or maybe even with more software tuning (they already fixed playback performance whit h264 422 10 bit.is not perfect but is better then in DR 17.1 release).I am also tested the new mac mini with m1. For daily business an iMac with catalina and a strong GPU as well as enough ram is the better joice. You can do some good work on hd content with easy editing similar to imovie.So for us pros we need to wait until the huge machines will arrive. But with the extrernal GPU it is still doing a good job for cutting and colorgrading as well as some basic video and audio transitions.The mini m1 is a disapointing video editing machine. Only fusion is slow of course the machine is a bit to old for really complex work. It is still fast enough to do complex work with some effects. Yes the mac pro was extremely slow but some basic colorgreading and cutting are still working.
